1280 Meadow Lane - 2018 Tekla North America BIM Awards

The residence is an 18,000 sq ft mansion built on a 6.2 acre property. It’s a complex mix of heavy built-up plates and HSS girders as well as curved structural shapes. The oceanfront building is elevated 10 to 12 ft from the ground, takes the form of a butterfly and made primarily of glass and limestone. The cantilevered perimeter beams are spliced with fiberglass reinforced composites sandwiched between steel plates to insulate the inside structure from the outside elements. Hollo-bolts are used to connect HSS members due to their boxed shapes and beam penetrations for the mechanicals are in plentiful abundance. Transport of long structural members sometimes required splicing for mobility in the NY area. The unique butterfly shape of the building and the abundance of curved members makes this project very challenging. The design team required BIM capable fabrication facility and our expertise in complex structures provided that. Tekla Structures’ capability to model almost any imaginable object and transform these into universal standard Cnc files provided the fabrication of steel in this project extremely accurate. Direct coordination and BIM file exchange between the Architect, the Engineer and the Steel detailer provided answers to a lot of questions and the user attributes available in Tekla made erection sequencing a non-issue.
